Days like this make you
miss Jim Bowden.

"It felt good to have the base hit. It's the first time in my life. I'm starting off good [in the NL]. I'm 1-for-1 on this side."
(Daniel Cabrera, via Nationals dot com, 3/12/2009)

Mind-numbing boredom sets in.

On a day when the big news out of Nationals' camp was Daniel Cabrera getting a hit  -- he's 0-14 with 14 strikeouts in his career, as you might have heard -- we find ourselves counting down the hours until Opening Day. Gosh, we're even having trouble getting worked up about the nightmare brewing in the bullpen. Harper at OMG put it this way a few days ago, and we couldn't agree more: Unless you're in Florida, "Spring Training is boooooring."

Back to Cabrera's big moment: over at Nationals Journal, Barry Svrluga provided a riveting account of the hit, and subsequent adventures on the basepaths:

...he stepped in and slapped a ball on a line to right field. A single. And it is simply a tragedy that TBS is not broadcasting this game, because it appeared Cabrera had never ever run at all as he tore off to first. He arrived in something of a crab-walk there, almost stumbling over the bag. Uncharted territory, perhaps.

Cristian Guzman was so stunned by the events that he proceeded to watch a strike sail by him. Then he popped to third. Then Lastings Milledge singled, allowing Cabrera -- think giraffe on roller skates -- to take second...

Now, the photo above shows Cabrera jogging prior to a game in Seattle last August. His stride looks pretty good, almost graceful - not like a giraffe on rollerskates - but more like a gazelle.
