Nationals agree to terms on a Major League contract with #1 pick Bryce Harper
SI's Jon Heyman Tweeted a few details shortly after midnight:
harper got $6.25 mil bonus,$9.9 mil in guarantees, si.com learned
(via @ SI_JonHeyman)
And more from Tim Brown/YahooSports:
Final on Harper: $9.9 million over five years, $6.25 million as bonus. Plus $500,000 roster bonuses in '14 and '15
(via @ TBrownYahoo)
So what are the implications of the Major League contract, beyond Harper being placed on the 40-man roster?
The official release from the Nationals reminds us of this: "The Nationals signed or agreed to terms with 33 players from their 2010 First-Year Player Draft, including 25 of their top 26 selections." Nice haul for Mike Rizzo & Co.
And by forking over the cash for top picks Harper, Cole, Solis, and Ray, we hereby promise to never mention the word "cheap" in the same sentence as Ted Lerner ever again.
