It was never in doubt: Nationals lock up at least a tie for worst record in baseball for 2nd year in a row.
Nats clinch Bryce Harper Sweepstakes victory courtesy of Pittsburgh's 11-1 win over the Dodgers yesterday. As first noted on Nationals Farm Authority, the Pirates win guarantees at least a tie for the worst record in baseball for the second year running, and by virtue of the tiebreaker seals up the #1 pick in the 2010 Draft for the Nats.
Somewhere in California, Scott Boras is licking his chops at the thought of taking more of Ted Lerner's money next summer.
On September 28th, 2008, a year ago yesterday, the Nats went down to the wire on the final day of the season to clinch the Strasburg Sweepstakes. This year it was never in doubt; they eventually backed into their Bryce Harper Sweepstakes victory exactly a year to the day after winning the right to pick Strasburg, thanks to the Pirates. The Pirates, meanwhile, prevented champagne from flowing for the Dodgers for another day with their win.
