(Luis Castillo, in happier times.)
Nationals fans didn't need another reason to boo the Mets, but now they have one. And Mets fans didn't need another reason to boo Carlos Beltran, Luis Castillo, and Oliver Perez, the only Mets players to skip an annual team visit to Walter Reed on Tuesday in D.C., but now they have one.
"The Three Stooges", as the Daily News dubbed them, are getting put through the wringer in the NY papers today. Mets COO Jeff Wilpoin is reportedly unhappy. Luis Castillo explains his no-show:
"I don't like to see people like that, so I never go there. Sometimes you see people with no legs, no arms. I don't like to see that."

Aw. Poor guy.
The bad news is, the Mets won't be coming to D.C. again in 2010, so we'll have to save our boos for next year.
David Wright, on the other hand, "gets it":
"Forget about being the New York Mets and playing baseball," Wright said. "I think that just being American and living in this country, we owe it to those guys to say thank you and tell them how much we appreciate what they put on the line every day -- and a lot of times what they've sacrificed. You're talking about guys a lot younger than me that are going over there and giving up their lives trying to fight for our freedom."
(David Wright, via Mets.com, 9/9/2010)
Well put, Mr. Wright. We'll still boo you next year, but maybe just a little more quietly than Castillo.

While we're at it, I find CitiField's proximity to lower Manhattan offensive. The Wilpons should relocate to Trenton to avoid further offending any sensibilities.

Are we sure that Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo didn't show up because that's what the vets wanted? I mean talk about adding insult to injury, you lose an arm for the country and they send you Oliver Perez...
